Visual Oil Inspection Methods

Appearance and color provide an easy means to detect changes that have taken place in oil. These changes include contamination with other oils, water contamination (often evidenced by haziness/cloudiness when in excess of 200 parts per million depending on oil type) and oxidation (darkening of the oil). The oil should be clear and bright with no visible water (haze or layered) or sediment. Comparing the oil's color to new, unused oil is useful in the examination process.

Guidelines for Using Gear Oil

Guidelines for Using Gear Oil

The American Petroleum Institute (API) GL rating system is intended for gear oil specifications. In general, the higher the GL rating, the higher the extreme pressure (EP) protection provided. This is great for reliability and wear reduction in hardened gear sets, but it can spell disaster for synchronizers.

Learn Machine 'Sign Language'

From "Daily One-Minute Lubrication Inspections and Field Tests":

Unlike people who have verbal skills, machines use "sign language" to communicate what hurts or what has invaded their system. Recognizing the "signs" or symptoms that the machine conveys is a required skill for those who work with machines and are responsible for their care and feeding. This involves training, practice and motivation.
