Trending Make-up Oil

When evaluating diesel engine oil analysis, make-up oil is an important trend to consider. Excessive make-up oil can signal problems with the engine that otherwise may go unnoticed. Excessive make-up oil can mask warning signals in the oil analysis such as abnormal base number depletion, additive depletion and viscosity increases or decreases. Excessive make-up oil also dilutes high wear metal trends and contamination levels. Contact the equipment manufacturer for typical make-up oil rates. The concept of trending make-up oil complements other information gathered by reliability and predictive maintenance-focused personnel. (John Sides, Thomas Petroleum)

What Is Tribology?

What Is Tribology?

Tribology is the study of the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion. To further understand tribology, it is important to know the definitions behind friction, wear and lubrication.

Need a good ROI? How about 39,000%?

It may sound too outrageous to be true, but the Institute of Mechanical Engineers estimates every $1,000 spent on proper lubrication yields $40,000 in savings. Visit Noria’s website to see how much we can help you save.

Think Oil Heating Up is No Big Deal? Think Again

Extended high-heat exposure can cause a phenomenon that permanently ruins oil viscosity, which in turn can result in quickly escalating (and often catastrophic) wear. What is the name of this phenomenon?

Taking Oil Samples from Pipes

From the "Wear Particle Atlas":

The sampling technique that gives the most representative sample is one in which the sample is taken from a pipe carrying oil scavenged from the wearing parts and before filtering. Clearly, it is necessary for the machine to be operational to do this. Care must be taken that the sample is representative of the complete system, i.e., that the scavenged oil has passed through all the wearing parts.
