Laser Level Lube Check

To establish the correct oil level in rotating equipment, use a laser level technique. First, determine the center line of the shaft and inscribe a line on the outside of the housing representing this point. Next, measure down one-half of the bearing pitch diameter (aka, mean diameter) and inscribe another line. The pitch diameter is the bore diameter plus the outside diameter divided by two. The lower inscribed line would be halfway up the lowest rolling element. Project the laser line to this lower inscribed line representing the correct oil level. (David Gunn, Cariboo Pulp & Paper)

Why Lube Oil Should Be Purified

From "Machinery Failure Analysis and Troubleshooting":

In the past two decades, the benefits of oil purification have been viewed primarily in the areas of reducing oil consumption and improving machinery reliability, thereby contributing to plant operating cost reduction. While these benefits are self-evident, it is becoming increasingly important to focus on methods of reducing plant emissions.
