How to Get More Life from Breathers
When a desiccant breather becomes saturated, it can often be reused if it is dried out. Attach the breather to a clean, dry compressed air line. Regulate the pressure down to 5 pounds per square inch and the flow to 0.5 standard cubic feet per minute. The desiccant will regenerate and allow the breather to be reused. Most desiccant breathers can be regenerated up to three times, with each time resulting in a slightly shorter lifespan. (Michael Lofald, SAPPI Fine Paper)

You should never assume new oil is fit for use right out of the container. In many cases, the lubricants you receive may be several cleanliness codes dirtier than what should be put into the equipment.

Analyzing Compressor Failures
From "Compressors: How to Achieve High Reliability and Availability":
When doing failure analysis and troubleshooting, all findings and conclusions must be supported by data and must conform to science. Because the failure of compressor components is not influenced by the supernatural, there will be logical explanations for everything. Every effect has a cause, and in nearly 100 percent of all failure incidents, a series of small contributing causes successively reduced the component failure margin. Ultimately several — in themselves small — deviations will combine into one big problem.
