One of the primary concerns with machinery lubrication is wear generation. Understanding this process, why it occurs, its presence and development, how to detect and analyze it, and what prevention measures need to take place to avert it can greatly improve site equipment reliability and work to minimize associated downtime resulting in a more profitable and enjoyable workplace.

It is important to understand how two metal surfaces within a machine interact with each other. All metal surfaces have some degree of surface roughness. Regardless of how smooth a surface may appear, each metal surface has high points and low valleys. Without some form of separation, such as that formed by a lubricant film, these surface asperities may seize upon contact.

A reciprocating compressor is a positive-displacement machine that uses a piston to compress a gas and deliver it at high pressure. They are often some of the most critical and expensive systems at a production facility, and deserve special attention. Gas transmission pipelines, petrochemical plants, refineries and many other industries all depend on this type of equipment.

With the proliferation of digital cameras, why not take a photograph of the oil sample (requires the use of a transparent sample bottle) and store the image in a trending software for comparative purpose. Record a new oil sample and use this as a baseline. Set the bottle against a white background such as a sheet of paper to maintain a consistent color comparison. Use the camera in other ways such as to record images of the machine and sampling point as a means of identifying it in the software, or to record abnormalities such as excessive leakages for easy located by mechanics.
Pictures are immediate and speak volumes, so use them to good effect in reports and trending software.
