One of the most common lubrication mistakes that plants around the world make every day is disregarding the costly impact of changing oil too frequently and over-greasing. When oil changes are optimized to the right intervals, many plants find that equipment reliability increases, which frees up maintenance budgets to tackle other issues.

A better purchasing strategy for companies is to minimize the life cycle cost of ownership. When you buy cheap you often are buying problems. Compounding the issue, once a lowest price specification is in place, companies tend to buy the same problems again and again. A similar scenario occurs when companies pretend to save money by buying lubricants from the lowest bidder.

You can visually inspect used filters once they are removed from the machine just by taking a good look at the filter to see how it appears. For instance, has the filter been damaged? Are the pleats bunched together? Do you see any cuts or damage in the pleats?

Lube Tip

Inspect the vent hole in column-type vented level gages routinely. In dirty environments, the vent hole can become easily plugged, causing an air lock in the gage headspace. This will result in a false oil level (higher than reality) in the gage. Many prefer dual-port gages instead (unvented).
