You may have heard a lot of these before, but they still ring true whether you’re the oiler, the maintenance tech or just a helper. Safety should be a priority to each individual, not just each facility. So remember, when you are sitting in a long safety brief, that safety starts with you, and it is for you.

Under typical driving conditions, running a quart low may not make much difference in terms of bearing temperature or overall engine lubrication. However, the engine also needs to be protected under worst-case conditions, such as in hot weather, while towing or with an impaired cooling system.

A well-stocked lube-room benefits from having everything stored in a manner that allows anyone who walks in to recognize what is kept where, what items are missing, what stock is low and even the condition of our equipment (be it grease guns, single point lubricators or top-up containers).

Lube Tip

Machines operating in an extremely dirty environment, such as in a forge or foundry, require extra care to prevent contamination. Try to keep the equipment sealed and avoid unnecessary opening of the reservoirs. Install quick disconnects in tanks and on fill vessels for filling or topping up hydraulic tanks. Add mainstream sampling taps on all equipment. This will result in a trude indication of the oil's condition, avoding any bottom sampling.
