Typical new oils meet specs for performance and viscosity—but not cleanliness. That third spec is compromising your equipment and costing your business.

The amount of water that is acceptable in oil (and thus acceptable in the machine's exposure) will depend on several factors, including the sensitivity of the machine and the lubricant to water, how long the water remains in the oil, the amount of oil/water interfacial surface area, and how much heat is present in the system.

Inspections of used oil filters can be quite helpful. By dissecting a filter, you can discover information about the filter itself by checking for collapsed media, bad seals or weak points that may have formed in the media during use. You may also learn about the machine's health by analyzing the debris caught in the filter.

Lube Tip

"Is it alright to use grease rather than oil to lubricate plain bearings?"
While it is not always the best lubricant choice for a plain bearing, grease is suitable when:
-
Speed is slow (below 400 rpm for a 2" bearing: below 50 rpm for an 80" bearing)
-
Bearing is subjected to frequent starts, stops or shock-loading conditions
-
Bearing is inaccessible for relubrication
