Grease Dry-out: Causes, Effects and Remedies

Grease Dry-out: Causes, Effects and Remedies

We all know that oil has a natural tendency to drain out of the grease thickener over time. We see conspicuous evidence of this when oil puddles in unleveled grease pockets in pails of new grease. A comprehensive condition monitoring strategy can help you mitigate the effects of grease dry-out.

Best Practices for Analyzing Gear Failures

With all the different gearbox failure modes, it’s important to be aware of the various tests that can be used to develop and confirm a hypothesis for the probable cause of failure. Lubricant samples can provide immediate means to detect contamination or other adverse changes to the lubricant.

How to Determine Your Oil's True Particle Count

How to Determine Your Oil's True Particle Count

Many variables can affect particle counts in oil analysis results. If you test oil in a machine that has just had an oil change or top-up, the particles in the sample will be diluted, producing false data. Likewise, collecting an oil sample when the machine has been down for more than 10 minutes can result in incorrect data.

 Better Than a Bull's-eye!

Most bull’s-eye level gauges confirm oil volume but don’t identify root causes and symptoms of machine failure. Luneta’s Condition Monitoring Pod™ allows early detection of abnormal machine and lubricant health conditions.

Lube Tip

The main factor that limits the use of mineral oils in high temperature applications is their oxidation stability, rather than the viscosity thinning or thermal stability. In the presence of air, it is generally not advisable to use mineral oils in any application at temperatures above 200 degrees F (93 degrees C).
