It is widely accepted that particle contamination reduces the service life of hydraulic components. Fact is, some level of particle contamination is always present in hydraulic fluid, even in new fluid. So how do you go about defining and achieving a fluid cleanliness level that optimizes hydraulic component life?

From the moment lubricants are put into service, they chemically breakdown. The primary pathway: oxidation. Only by managing oxidation levels and removing oxidation material as it is generated can the root cause of varnish be eliminated.

Some lubricants work better with certain refrigerants, and this must be balanced with the needs of the compressor in order to select the proper base oil and additive properties. By understanding how lubricants flow with refrigerants, as well as the requirements of the lubricant, you can ensure your compressors will run as efficiently and effectively as possible.

An obvious reason to perform oil analysis is to understand the condition of the oil, but it is also intended to help bring to light the condition of the machine from which the oil sample was taken. There are three main categories of oil analysis: fluid properties, contamination and wear debris.

Why is water considered an evil? Water will affect the oil’s base stock, encouraging oxidation, viscosity increase and foaming. Water can also affect the additive package through water washing and hydrolysis, leading to acids and additive depletion.

Oil analysis and particle counting are very important in unfiltered compartments such as heavy equipment final drives and differentials. However, if these compartments have magnetic plugs, occasionally the magnets will show a buildup of fuzz and you may have the beginnings of bearing failure while the oil sample remains relatively clean. This is an example of when manual inspection is very important along with oil analysis and particle counting.
