We expect lubricants to arrive on-site as they were advertised at the time of purchase: having the proper viscosity, base oil, performance characteristics, and last but certainly not least, the ability to meet certain contamination cleanliness targets. However, assuming every lubricant that arrives on the dock meets those expectations would not be reasonable-in fact, it would be downright dangerous.

Early wind turbines had no diagnostic systems included by Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). It is now common to rely on annual or semi-annual oil samples from the gearbox sump using spectrographic iron analysis to alert operators of developing problems. However, the chances of sampling the turbine at the optimum time to detect a problem are unlikely.

The current practice for the users of industrial lubricants has been to assume that all deposits or varnishes are created equal. One tends to look at the color of a deposit and assume that, since it is brown, it must be the same as the brown sample previously observed. This assumption can be far from correct and can lead to taking the wrong corrective actions. There are many chemistry types in varnish materials.

Often overlooked by plant personnel, a microscope is a simple tool that can help you understand what is happening inside your machine. In this video, Noria expert Wes Cash explains how even an inexpensive microscope will enable you to analyze the shape of wear debris and diagnose machine health. Discover how to identify the different types of wear patterns and determine how pronounced the wear inside your equipment is.

Put a permanent label on each pump and gearbox in your plant stating the type of oil it takes and what the normal capacity is. This reduces the frequency of accidentally adding the wrong oil to a piece of equipment.
